Maine Blogs

Mahraiah (my loving partner), and I (Bear) moved from Austin, Texas to Maine in August, 2016, and now more specifically Wells.  The blogs on this page are about a new state for us-Maine-and about people, places & things in community as we acclimate to this new & unfamiliar land and water.  It’s beautiful here, so we’ll be sharing stories about this brand-new adventure!  Want to come along for the ride?

1690 Bake House & Café-New Kids on the Block

Turns out there is more than one coffee house in Wells, Maine! The 1690 Bake House & Café, at 1690 Post Road, Wells, Maine 04090 [(207) 360-2009],opened about five months ago, and its owners are Grace, Kristen & Doug. Grace is a retired, corporate worker, and Kristen & Doug are Bakery Chefs, who left the area, and worked in Boston for several years.

Grace related that her family originally immigrated to the U.S. from Portugal; many of her relatives & family members live in Massachusetts, and the Portuguese language is still spoken by many. She told us that she visits Portugal regularly, and loves going back. Grace brings wonderful, multi-cultural gifts to the Bake House!

Everything you’ll sample at the Bake House is baked each day, by Kristen, early in the morning. Grace is kind of the community-face of the Bake House, and really has a passion for what she’s doing right now! The 1690 Bake House & Café include community and friendly gatherings, and spaces can be rented for such occasions.

The Café also has Airbnb available in the house next door to the Café (for more information, (contact their email at: contact@1690.com); there’s one, sunlit room that is good-sized for larger gatherings, and a beautiful, rustic, screened-in back porch to sit with your coffee, and let the breeze roll off your skin.

As you enter the Bake House, you’ll note shining, pinewood floors that are original with the house. In fact, the Café was once the barn for animals, in its original form. The floors are shimmering & beautiful!
